What is water baptism? And why should I be baptized?

Baptism is symbolic.

It's a public profession that you have put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and declare to follow Him.  Baptism declares to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life.

Baptism demonstrates obedience.

Jesus was baptized, and it's because of His example of humility that we follow salvation with the next step of baptism.  Baptism by immersion in water is referenced many times in Scripture. All who repent and believe in Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized.

Scriptures that affirm baptism:

  • Romans 6:4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
  • Matthew 28:19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • Acts 10:47-48 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” 48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.
