So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Luke 11:9-10

Ask, and it will given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

When I read over the two verses of scripture above, they are almost word for word! Both Matthew and Luke found it important to include this in their testimony of Christ. What does it look like for you to “seek” God? How crucial is it as a Christian to seek spending time with the Creator of the universe? These verses are known as the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus is giving believers a description of how we should live. What if we look at it as simply a relationship where we find all our needs met? In a world where people and unmet expectations let us down constantly, let’s turn our focus to seek the one who can meet each and every need!

In the scriptures above, Jesus is not saying that believers always get what they ask for, nor should we think with that mind set. That kind of thinking can produce wrong motives. However, the more we seek God and the more we as Christians commune with God, the more we may know the Lord’s will for our life. Prayer in and of itself does not produce holiness but it does show a dependence on God for needs that can be met no other way.

God is always pleased with us when we come to Him in prayer, and when we seek to commune with Him. He wants relationship with us. The Bible says it’s not enough to just believe in God, even the demons understand and believe in his deity. No, we must have faith that leads us into a desire for relationship with Him! Through relationship is where we find ourselves in need of repentance which leads to redemption. It is only by faith in what God can do, and what Christ has done, that brings about true holiness, instead of our own selfishness and self-righteousness.

Reflection:

Think about different relationships in your life. Sometimes we can count on others, and other times we can’t. People let us down, many times they aren’t going to meet our needs. Yet, how much more does our Father in heaven want to meet our needs? And He knows what those are before we even come to Him, yet He still says come because He desires to commune with us. He desires to meet our needs and to give us what we are asking for, just like the scripture says. We can rest in assurance that He desires relationship with us so much that His door is always open to us, His children. So today, find yourself a quiet place knock on the door of your Father’s heart and rest in His presence as you commune with the one who gave up His life for you!
